Chargrilled Sweet Baby Peppers

Look at those glorious colours on those peppers!  They scream out “summer is here!”.  As soon as I smell the chargrilled flesh of these morsels, I picture myself on an idyllic Greek isle sipping a crisp white and enjoying these as part of a meze platter.  But for the time being I’ll have to do with inner city Sydney as my location.

As you can see I enjoy them “doused” with copious amounts of extra virgin olive oil.  It’s the only way to enjoy them as far as I’m concerned.  Make sure you have plenty of pita bread to mop up the smoked, oily chargrilled goodness.  I usually add some slivers of garlic and a few splashes of red wine vinegar to the mix but I was so hungry I couldn’t wait.  Cook, shoot and eat! This dish is also “dental” friendly so it works for my mouth at the moment!…(that’s the last time I mention that!)

You can serve them as part of an antipasto platter or store them with the oil in a container and use them in other dishes.  I love adding them to sandwiches or home made pizza.  If you have a bbq, heat it up and get grilling!  However, if you find yourself in a little apartment, heat up your cast iron grill pan, switch on the fans and hope that the fire brigade doesn’t turn up!  Once you’ve blistered the skin on these beauties you pretty much know they’re ready.  I opted not to remove their skins because they were so small but if you’re a purist place them in a brown paper bag and let the steam created soften their skin and peel it off.  Drizzle with oil, your favourite herbs and spices and gobble them up!  Yes they’re that good!

Summer for you … winter for us. I think each season has it’s beauty though.
Those peppers are quite beautiful … perfect shapes, colors, etc. I love them grilled that way too. You enjoy the true taste of the pepper.

This is one of my daughters favourites that she has shown me. She learned it from her Portuguese boyfriend who claims it for their own…but I imagine it is a popular dish in many countries:D

I love grilled pepper. I usually throw in some rosemary leaves for a scent. Love this with rustic roast chicken!

They look delicious! I love these peppers! One summer I ate so many raw ones, I actually developed a sensitivity to them and had to stop eating them for a while! Talk about OD-ing! LOL!

I have a jar of these that I put up a month or so ago, just waiting for the right moment to crack them open. :) I love the antipasti photos.

Looks delicious Peter. I absolutely adore grilled peppers, and who doesn’t love everything doused in olive oil? :)

Love the simple preparation. Charred peppers are one of my favourite things. Will have to give the extra olive oil dousing a try next time.

Ah Peter, I can smell them from here! ;-) I agree with the copious amounts of olive oil overtop, may I also suggest some fresh garlic? So, summer is starting there and the first snowflakes have appeared here… Enjoy it!

Peter – this looks lovely. I love the flavor bell peppers get when roasted and with oil (and a bit of garlic) a good piece of bread this would be a perfect meal – oh of course a good glass of wine to go with it too.

The contrast of the red and yellow peppers on the blue plate is stunning, Peter. But, you knew that already, right? :)

I want to dive in and eat my way out of those peppers! It’s hot enough here in San Diego to fire up the barbecue….

I prefer them with the skin peeled. Roast peppers are such a treat and so easy to make I always wonder why people don’t make them more often.

I could eat the whole plate full of those beautiful peppers right now. Great post and excellent photos.

Nothing better than grilled peppers – I agree that olive oil and garlic (plus a little bit of salt) is the perfect way to eat them. Your gorgeous pictures just jump off the screen.

Us Makedones will have roasted peppers often in lieu of meat and looking at these babies…I’m all for a roasted pepper fest again!

I realize you’re in a flat and can’t grill them but your ingenuity in your flat is commended.

Dear Peter, I hope your tooth gets fixed soon. My husband went through heavy tooth surgery and I know what you mean… I was squeezing my brain to find “friendly tooth” dishes as you say :D

Estos pimientos están de Muerte!!!!!! (do you know the expression?)
