It’s blowing outside.
It’s cold.
And all I feel like doing is making a batch of soup and enjoying it with some sourdough rye bread. I used some butternut pumpkin (squash) and thickened it with some red lentils. It’s spiced up with some fresh chili, garam masala and ground cumin. Enjoy your weekend everybody!
RECIPE FOR PUMPKIN SOUP WITH LENTILS
- 1 diced red onion
- 1 small freshly chopped chili
- a pinch of garam masala and ground cumin
- 1/2 a butternut pumpkin cubed
- 2 cups of chicken stock
- 1 cup of water
- 1/2 a cup of red lentils
- Fry off the onion with the chili and spices in a little olive oil until the onions become translucent.
- Add the pumpkin and stir thoroughly through the onion mixture.
- Add the chicken stock and ensure everything boils for about 15 mins.
- Add the lentils and boil for another 5 mins.
- Remove from the heat and blend everything using a stick blender
Serve with some crusty sourdough bread.

Sorry it’s so chilly on your side of the world. I love lentil soup and I love pumpkin but I haven’t thought to combine them in a soup, but when the wind is blowing this way…. I also think you chose well with spices. I think a glass of red wine would be a nice accompaniment too!
It looks lovely. I love lentil and pumpkin.
Perfect food for a cold day, peter! It looks lovely! I wish I could blow some of our hot air into your direction. Although right now it is pouring down, but I am sure it will be better soon.
What a delightful soup! I’ll eat that this autumn… Now, I’m too busy sweating because of the summer heat ;-P! Nice shot!
Cheers,
Rosa
It looks a wonderful recipe Peter, a very cozy food for hard winter times. I’m almost feel unfortunate to not being able to taste it soon as here in the upper part of World neart the Mediterranean Sea the temperature today is near 35 C and raising :S
I’ll have to bookmark it for cooler days
That is an awesome soup Peter, I love it! Pumpkin soup is one of my favorites, and I also really love red lentils, I can imagine that they go really well together!
A bit too hot for soup here, although it rains as well, I’ll boukmark the soup though!
I love the addition of the red lentils and the spicing. So many of our soups like this are sweet and I don’t really like that when it’s cold out. The picture is lovely, too.
gorgeous color! you’re already eating fall foods…wow! btw, i always put garam masala in my pumpkin soup
i think it helps balance out the squash flavor.
That garam masala will surely warm your soul & tummy. The colour of the soup is brilliant….a sunburst of soupy delight!
Beautiful soup! I can feel the warmth it provides just by looking at the picture. The perfect meal for a cold day. I will file it under my winter recipes. I love garam masala, and it seems that it pairs really well with winter vegetables and pulses. Delicious!
Isn’t it positively icy! Before Thursday was ok but I think we’re up for some very cold weather soon
Lucky you have this delicious soup to keep you company!
I love tyhe color of this soup. So rich and warm I am sure it will heat up the soul and body!

What a great way to enjoy the oh-so-boring lentils!
Peter, what a lovely recipe. I think I will make this soup tonight, as I am on your site of the world (Wellington) and it’s freezing over here at the moment.
Thanks for sharing.
I am sitting with 2 fans blowing, the oven on (aghast!!!!) and wishing I was still out in the boat enjoying cool lake breezes. I can certainly see how this creamy soup would hit the spot on a blustery day:D
Great recipe, I love pumpkin , I always have one in my fridge
Such a nice version of pumpkin soup. I love lentils and spices so can imagine how much they would life the flavour….Will have to try it once I get back to the cold cold weather of Sydney……
an awesome combination of ingredients – lentils and pumpkin! i really like the Indian spice here too!
This looks delicious, Peter. I really love how you spiced it up, and I am a big fan of anything with lentils!
Pumpkin and curry are best mates – love the use of garam masala here. Garam masala, five spice and pumpkin pie spice (do they have that in Oz?) all have that lovely warming quality that is so perfect for an autumn soup.
Ahhh, winter! I love all seasons and to me there is something extremely comforting in winter–I love to hibernate just a little and this soup would really help me do that! It looks delicious…love the spices and the pumpkin along with the lentils. It’s a soup with body!
I’ve never had this combination before but it would certainly be a great addition to our winter soups.
Perfect for the winter nights here, Pete.
Glorious color!
Ahhhhh! I love pumpkin soup! It’s my favorite soup. Yours looks spicy and delicious.
The best soups are the spicy ones. They really warm you all around, hehe. Yummy!
Just made this soup this week, and it was absolutely delicious, a very suprising creamy texture and taste, the hard part was saving some for the next day
This is absolutely divine…I must have made it half a dozen times or more now!!
