Recovery Food

tomato and capsicum soup with buttered toasts

This is a mish mash of a post.  A few different things to discuss.

While a new man was being elevated to the heights of power on Tuesday, I was being elevated in a dentist’s chair seeking treatment for a cracked tooth!  As it so happens I bit into a Greek sugared almond, “koufeta” as we call them and managed to some how crack one of my teeth dead centre in the middle!  Diagnosis: NOT GOOD!  He couldn’t save it he explained and it was quite “rare” for such a split.  But while I was there he discussed getting all my wisdom teeth out as they were “forcing my gum forward and creating discomfort”.  Look, I dread the dentist, like a lot of people but it had to be done.  So I booked in and I had an operation for 5 extractions!!!!    All I can say is thank god for Sleep Dentistry.   An amazing procedure where you are sedated but are actually awake.  I remember nothing, not even the euphoria that followed.  (Apparently, my friend who had to drive me home said I was swearing like a trooper in the post op and was demanding pizza and cold beers!..LOL!…Go figure!)  Recovery has been good so far but all I can basically manage to eat for the next few days are soups and soft foods!  This is a soup I make and keep it in the freezer for those “I can’t be bothered” times.  The recipe is originally on my blog here. (the little buttered toasts you see were fully dunked to ensure softness!).

I could have seen the whole experience in a negative light and complained but I am really trying to focus on the positives and the love of good friends and family around me.  Really, what did I have to whinge about?  I’m healthy, have good health coverage, food in my stomach and a roof over my head.  A little discomfort won’t kill me!  I am truly grateful for what I have!  In order to keep occupied during this recovery time I realised that it’s spring time and there are so many flowers out and about.  I wanted to be creative so I shot a few of these flower pictures for your enjoyment.  Hope you like!

So between sinusitis/flu and “wisdom” teeth (why the call them that I will never know!…there’s nothing wise about them!) I actually got an invite to go and stay at a luxurious, “old world”, grand hotel in my old city.  I’ll be there capturing every moment and eating my way through all the offerings.   Can’t wait to be pampered…

That sounds painful but post op euphoria sounds hilarious…wish your friend had a video ;) …sorry, could not resist that, but I am glad you too are looking on the bright side of things. I wonder what I would do when I have mine taken out…hence, been dreading my trip to the dentist :( These flowers are just gorgeous. It’s nice to see your bright photos as everything has started to dry out on this side of the world…Can’t wait to see what you capture at this hotel!

ouch… that sounds painful! I’m avoiding getting my wisdom teeth extracted at all costs! But when I eventually do get them yanked, I’ll be sure to think back to this post and perhaps eat nothing but this soup for the weeks that follow.

Lovely photos.

We food bloggers are a hearty lot. I, too, recently had surgery and immediately came home and posted about how I catered my own recovery

Enjoy your pampering — and feel better soon!

Those are GORGEOUS soup and flower photos. Good for you for seeing the nice side of something unpleasant.

that’ll teach you to bite too quickly into koufeta!

This is the most meaningful part of your post: “I’m healthy, have good health coverage, food in my stomach and a roof over my head. A little discomfort won’t kill me. I am truly grateful for what I have.”

I wish many more people would see life in this way. I’m linking this post with my up-coming Thanksgiving post.

Oh my goodness what an ordeal! Well done for getting through that one, I had no idea about sleep dentistry, what a wonderful idea! Your soup looks gorgeous and such a vibrant colour, I am sure it was very comforting. Get well soon!

What kind of koufeta was that?!
That was a great post and you got us all thinking … we definitely have to be grateful for what we do have at the moment and be humble enough to know things can change in an instant.

A speedy recovery Peter. I remember picking up my husband after wisome teeth extraction….it was kind of a hilarious experience:D

Oh no, Peter! Sorry to hear about the tooth and the extractions. I actually just finished eating koufeta not 5 minutes ago – now I know why I am always sucking on them instead of biting, lol. The pictures are so great!

Yikes. You’ve got all my sympathy when it comes to the cracked tooth. That can be painful!

On the other hand, it’s nice to see you had time to tarry with the flowers. Those are some truly lovely photos.

You poor baby! I wish I could be there to give you a little TLC Auntie Heather-style (which means I ply you with bourbon and honey and make you watch bad DVDs such as Step Up 2 The Streets).

I had a cracked molar last year and then I proceeded to crack the crown they put on it. I know how much that hurts.

Perastika Peter…going to the dentish for anything other than a cleaning sucks.

13 Marc @ NoRecipes November 10, 2008 at 12:34 am

Ouch, I’ve been there too and it’s no fun. Hope you feel better soon!

Bucket of sympathy! I have had a tooth out few weeks ago and I can sympathise with the wisdom teeth as my wisdom teeth all were taken out together few years ago and that was soooooo painful.

Hope you feel better soon :)

oh Peter you poor thing! I hope you feel better soon! But you have a great positive attitude and I’d shar that soup any day with you. The creative flower pictures look stunning. Hugs!

Ha, ha, ha this is too much! 5 teeth!!!! That is a lot of money here… Dentists are richer than 3 michelin star Restaurant’s owners ;D

Euphoria after the sedation is quite normal but also agresivity… your friend was lucky you belonged to the first group :D .

A good soup always makes me feel better and flowers enlighten a room, a house… or one’s heart :D

Ohhh, beautiful pictures! I love them. I wish it was Spring here.

Sorry about your teeth! That sucks. No, it’s worse that sucks. It’s horrible and terrible.

18 arfi November 10, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I know that feeling although I am not a dentist regulars (nothing wrong with my teeth whatsoever-I’m lucky I got pretty good tough ones hehehe). I hope you’re feeling better now, P. I am curious about the nostalgic photos you’ve been posting on flickr, though… what kind of gadget you’ve got there? Is it some kind of digital as well?

19 Toni November 12, 2008 at 1:20 am

Love that post-op euphoria – too bad you can’t remember it! The soup looks pretty darned good, too. Love the idea of having it in the freezer for those times……..

OUCH! Just reading about your dental experience makes my jaw ache. I’m glad to see your photographer’s eye is still intact. I particularly like the one with the fringed cloth – it’s lovely. And the soup looks just as good the second time around.

21 Simply...Gluten-free November 12, 2008 at 11:25 pm

There is nothing like pretty flowers and good soup to take your mind off your aches and pains. Too bad you can’t remeber the post op euphoria – LOL! Bet you had a good time. Did anyone produce those pizzas and cold beers?

Hey Peter!

Sorry I missed this and am late to the get better soon party! I can empathize, Roberto has had tons of oral work this year and I feel like we are always back and forth between a soft food and regular food diet! :)

23 Susan from Food Blogga November 14, 2008 at 6:55 pm

I so empathize, Peter. I’ve had my share of tooth problems over the last couple of years. May I also suggest milkshakes and oatmeal? I know, I know, try not to get too excited.

24 Ivy November 15, 2008 at 4:13 am

Sorry I’m late to say “perastika” and I can imagine what you went through. When the dentist took out my wisdom teeth (2 on one side) my jaw would not open for a whole day and night and I only drunk liquid through a straw. This is something you will remember all your life!!
