After a “hard” day’s swimming around the islands located in the Gulf of Thailand there was really no better way to end it than with a private seafood barbecue right on the beach! Ok…let me clarify. It wasn’t a traditional “bonfire” type of barbecue. It was a beautiful table set up for dinner on the sand for the six of us. The folks at the Sareeraya really know how to lay out a spread! We had our own personal waiter, who was amazing and efficient in keeping us hydrated and fed the whole evening. Very luxurious and very five star!

It was a balmy 26 dec C and there was a slight seaside breeze in the air. Koh Samui could not have been more perfect! The moon was bright and provided additional lighting to the mini fire torches placed around the dining area on the sand. We started the evening off with cocktails and proceeded to enjoy a fabulous array of beautiful cooked seafood. To be honest, I’m not really a seafood person. But how can one say no when such a beautiful island is surrounded by waters that provide an abundance of fresh seafood daily?

And boy did I eat with “hungry” abandon. We began with individual green salads and a selection of breads, including some very popular grissini! And then it began! Whole crabs, lobsters, prawns, mussels, snapper, squid souvlaki and oysters. Except for the oysters and mussels everything was barbecued to perfection. And let’s not forget the dipping sauces that were provided to enjoy our seafood with. The favourite of the night was the mango salsa. Thai mangoes are a little smaller and sweeter than the regular sized mangoes you find here in Australia. The flesh was diced into cubes and mixed with a little palm oil, chopped coriander and lime juice. My personal favourite was the Thai “prik nam plah”. Diced baby, red and green chillies (which are fiercly hot) mixed with fish sauce and lime juice. It’s a bit of an acquired taste but I believe it offset the sweetness of the shellfish especially. In the end we were stuffed but some of us couldn’t resist and ordered desserts! Oh well…when you’re on holidays …… Apart from the Thai food we ate (which I will cover in my Thai cooking classes post…bear with me..its coming!) we rated this seafood barbecue as one of the highlights of our gastronomical adventures. The atmosphere was perfect and dreamlike and the seafood was super fresh and prepared immediately. Another great night in Koh Samui!

The photo below will give you an indication of how bright the moon was that bathed us that evening. And in the water you can see the fishing boats that were leaving Koh Samui to go and catch another haul for the next day! I won’t be forgetting this night in a long time!

While I was browsing through the images I was thinkin “let’s hope Peter will share some thai cuisine secret he learnt there”, so I’m really waiting with impatience your next posts.
Peter, these posts have me so, so wistful. It sounds like such an ideal vacation. That last shot is simply magical. And I adore seafood, it’s my favorite, so I would have been in heaven.
the seafood looks absolutely amazing – i’m waiting for a description of the desserts too
Wow. How romantic! So much seafood, very heavenly. I loved Thailand.
Pete, I could eat seafood dinners each night…when they are this fresh and me living in Canada…I just have to be a glutton with seafood.
Again, you demonstrate a good eye for photos.
Can’t tell you how jealous I am right now … but so glad you enjoyed something like that and captured it so beautifully for all of us to see!
Extremely romantic, extremely relaxing and extremely drool-worthy fare!
What a fantastic atmosphere Peter and those photos are just gorgeous. Especially considering the difficult lighting circumstances you must have had when taking them! Beautiful! And the food looks amazing too.
my lord, how luxurious. it doesn’t seem real.
Everything looks amazing, the food, the atmosphere and your photos are beautiful.
Wow! That last photo is just STUNNING. The photos of your dinner weren’t bad either!
You know Roberto and I enjoyed a similar kind of evening when on our honeymoon in Jamaica, it was an amazing experience that I will never forget!
I think i am going to stop reading your posts for a while! They make me soooo jealous!
I’m always stumped when asked on foodie profiles…”what is your dream meal”…and generally leave it blank because, really, how can I narrow my love of food down to just one experience. But I think you did it for me. Next time I’ll know what to write! Photos are beautiful.
Definitely a night worth remembering Peter. What memories were created there.
Peter I have only just now had a chance to catch up on some blog reading – thank you for taking us on this virtual vaca! your photos are absolutely stunning and I am so glad you had such a memorable trip. I will admit I am pretty jealous but also inspired!
