Cabbage Rolls

by Peter G November 24, 2011 Greek Food
Thumbnail image for Cabbage Rolls

As a child, I would never have gone anywhere near cabbage rolls let alone cabbage. It fell into the “icky” and “yucky” group of adjectives usually spoken by kids. Perhaps it was the sulphurous aroma that made me detest it. I can’t

Greek Style Baked Beans

“Beans, beans are good For your heart The more you eat The more you f… “ This was the mantra of my childhood. We used to repeat this (obviously changing the last word!..I’ll leave you to work that one out!) and giggle every time we said it. And whilst it provided a sense of entertainment to a bunch of children

Arakas me Patates (Braised peas and potatoes)

Brrrrr…” That icy wind blowing outside is showing no mercy! I’m feeling very content in my little apartment all rugged up with a cup of tea. The best part of winter for me, is being able to cook up comfort foods. Nourishing, warm “soothe the soul” kinda foods. Comfort food doesn’t always have to equal “stodge” though. Nor does it involve a journey

Zucchini Bread

Do you have some sort of plan when you head out to do grocery shopping?  I like to think I do but a lot of the time i find myself distracted and end up buying things “I’d like to try” ($13 bags of Iranian fairy floss anyone?…ahem).  Other times

Braised Chicken with Snake Beans

Food memories. I’m sure we all have them. Cold, canned, tomato soup from school camp?  A slice of freshly baked chocolate cake?  Big, red juicy cherries in the summer time?  Im sure I could conjure up a hell of a lot more if I put my mind to it. One childhood food memory that will never go away is the one of “fasolakia” cooking on the stove top in the [...]

Artichokes with Spaghetti

There are certain moments in my life that I’ll never forget.  Obtaining my drivers licence.  Moving out of home.  And cleaning my first artichoke!… I remember the day I got my driving licence – it took 23 lessons!…I  just wanted to be sure!  I definitely remember the first time I moved out of home and gained that ever important independence.  If anybody knows Greek mothers, you know what an achievement [...]

In my continuing efforts to try and “Greek-ify” recipes, I came up with this “concept” whilst developing a recipe for the Australian Mushroom Growers Association.  Australia, along with Canada and the US are currently pitted against each other in a competition

Cauliflower Soup

I just realised that in my three and half years of blogging, I have never featured a recipe for cauliflower on Souvlaki For The Soul!  Shock!  Horror!  It’s a vegetable I have not really experimented with much over the years.  It’s not that I

Cavolo Nero

When I first heard the name Cavolo Nero I honestly thought somebody was talking about an Italian opera singer.  Well, I was partly right.  Cavolo Nero is of Italian origin and mostly found in the Tuscany region.  It has dark green leaves that are almost black in colour and each leaf has a tough central stalk.  It was those stalks that caused me a lot issues

Braised Okra

Today I’m adding another dish to my stable of Greek recipes.  Braised okra or “bamies” as we say in Greek (pronounced bum-yes) is a wonderful, tasty vegetarian dish.  Truth be told, I was never a fan of okra.  Especially, whilst growing up.  I know it seems like I keep on repeating myself  about particular foods, but I learnt

Lentil Soup-”Fakes”

I love lentils!  I’m thinking of getting that printed on a t-shirt and telling the whole world.  Ok. Maybe that’s a little over the top but what’s not to love about this legume?  It’s healthy, full of fibre and definitely fills

Just when I thought the weather had cooled down we get another batch of ugly humidity here in Sydney!  I made this carrot and dill mash recently when I was experimenting for an autumn dinner party.  I sometimes get tired of serving the usual

The “Merry Season” is upon us.  Only two weeks left now before we start saying “Happy Holidays” and get to overindulge for one day and then go ahead and repeat it all the next day!  Yes, I’m talking about Christmas.  This year I plan on spending it with family but I will be holding a pre Xmas

Kohlrabi and Greens Pie

Thumbnail image for Kohlrabi and Greens Pie

Where would we be without “pita”?  In this instance I refer to pita as meaning a Greek pie-very similar to my spanakopita or spinach and fetta pie.  Pites (plural) in Greece come in many shapes and forms and are very much dictated by regionality, ingredients and local customs.   Anyone (you know…those people who proclaim themselves as “experts”and suffer from delusions of grandeur…especially on the internet) who tells you otherwise [...]
