Tangelos

tangelos, oranges and lemons

I take my citrus seriously.  Seriously!  My latest farmers market haul included the usual winter goodies of oranges, lemons and tangelos.  It had been ages since I had eaten tangelos and I really wanted to share my experience with them with you. They’re a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, full of juicy goodness.  They look like an orange, shaped like a grapefruit but taste like a tangerine.  Very versatile indeed.  In fact they are prized for their juice and often have more juice than pulp.  There are a few varieties but they all share that distinct “honey” like taste…in one word, addictive.

I thought about making a jam or a marmalade.  Then I thought about making a steamed pudding using them as a flavouring but in the end I enjoyed them naturally.  I simply peeled them and dolloped some Greek yogurt over them.  The final touch was to sprinkle them with some L.S.A (linseed, sunflower and almond mixture).

A nice, healthy and light start for a casual brunch.  (I won’t talk about the sourdough toast with lashings of Danish butter that I gulped down afterwards!).  And a little bit different to my last one. My ususal espresso kept me company along with all the good food news of the blogosphere on my laptop.  Life is good!

I’m entering my last picture for this month’s Click Event which is themed “Citrus”.

  2. beautiful shot. thanks for the info on tangelos. i always get confused between the different varieties of citrus in the market.

  3. Tangelos are rare here, but maybe if you are finding them at the farmers market they are now in season and we might see them at the grocers:D

  4. I love tangelos. My two favorite seasons are when I can get plums and peaches (now) and when citrus comes into full bloom in the winter.

  5. I have never had tangelos and I am not sure we see much of them here in Canada. I will keep my eyes out for them now and see if I don’t happen across any in some of the markets I visit. Thanks!

  6. I haven’t had tangelos is a very long time but remember them being delicious. Beautiful photographs!

  7. Wow! like honey…I don’t think I’ve tasted a Tangelo. You’re lucky to find these at your farmer’s market because citrus is one thing we can’t get locally! Love your rustic table there :)

  8. Greece would be the last country to see these lovely citrus. However your pictures look lovely as always. Must come to Australia.

Peter I have an award for you.

  9. If it tastes like a tangerine, then it has my vote :D It is your turn to give us some lessons about new ingredients.

  10. I’ve never had a tangelo either. I’m intrigues now - they sound so good! I suspect that they just haven’t reached the UK yet sadly.

    Beautiful pictures!

  11. Ha! I bought a whole lot of tangelos off late myself! They are sooooo juicy and no pips!! I am planning to think of a recipe to use the tangelos for the QueenLeftOver cooking joust.

  12. i do love tangelos - their flavor is everything you describe. As for cooking them, you really can’t go wrong with raw fruit and yogurt. And a great Click entry too!

  13. Now I really want a tangelo! I didn’t know it was a cross between an orange and a grapefruit. I think eating them with Greek yogurt would be delicious.
Good luck in the event! I think you’ll win with these pics.

  14. I love tangelos too Peter! I haven’t had one since last winter though. Gorgeous shots, as always! Perfect for Click! Best of luck!
