Melomakarona (Greek Honey Cookies)

In Greece, melomakarona (festive Greek honey cookies) are a Christmas tradition. They are baked until golden, dipped in a honey sugar syrup and topped with ground walnuts.

The holiday season is the best time to serve these delicious Greek Christmas cookies.

INGREDIENTS

Prepare the honey syrup

Combine the sugar, water and lemon juice in a saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Turn the heat down & cook for 5 minutes.

Prepare the walnut topping

Add the walnuts to a food processor. Pulse a few times (make sure not to over-process them), and set them aside.

Prepare the dry ingredients

Sift the flour, baking powder, and soda in a large bowl and set aside.

Prepare the wet ingredients

Combine the orange zest, sugar, cinnamon, cloves, olive oil, orange juice and brandy.

Make the cookie dough

Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture and mix until combined (make sure there are no visible signs of any flour).

Shape the melomakarona

Roll the ball with your hands, form it into an oval shape, and flatten it slightly.

Dip the melomakarona

Dip the hot cookies into the prepared cold syrup and toss for one minute on each side.

Top with walnuts

Drain the cookies and place them on a plate using a slotted spoon and decorate with crushed walnuts.
