It’s time for the Royal Foodie Joust again!  Folow the link and head on over to participate in the foodie blogosphere’s biggest cooking challenge.  There are great prizes and it certainly allows you to put your “thinking cap” on to come up with a creative recipe based on three ingredients.  Kittie who won last months joust, chose whole grains, citrus and ginger.   Initially I was a little stumped and [...]

This is a simple “throw everything together” kind of pasta dish that I enjoyed a few weeks ago and only got around to posting now.  Remember when I prepared last month’s Joust entry and I used prawns?  Well I had so may leftover that I had to use them quickly.  A great idea came to me to pair the prawns with some of the loukaniko I also had lying [...]

Tea Cake with a Sticky Tangelo Syrup

Aaaah!  I gave in!  After eating enough tangelos to last me a life time, I still had many leftover.  There they were, on the counter, staring at me in their big brown bowl.   I didn’t want to complicate things very much and I honestly thought about making a jam or a marmalade with the tangelos, but I just couldn’t muster the energy to sterilise jars etc…  So I cheated [...]

Tangelos

I take my citrus seriously.  Seriously!  My latest farmers market haul included the usual winter goodies of oranges, lemons and tangelos.  It had been ages since I had eaten tangelos and I really wanted to share my experience with them with you. They’re a cross between an orange and a grapefruit, full of juicy goodness.  They look like an orange, shaped like a grapefruit but taste like a tangerine.  Very [...]

Loukaniko

“Loukaniko” is the Greek word for sausage.  The best way for me to describe it would be to compare it to the Spanish chorizo, without any offence to the Spaniards.  Loukaniko is full of porky goodness (Heather are you listening?…LOL!) often flavoured with fennel seeds or orange peel.  It’s a dry sausage and its usually prepared smoked.  The Northern Greek version is often spicier with the addition of chili or [...]

I was visiting my brother and his family in my hometown of Melbourne last week and had the chance to stay with them for a few days.  They live on the outskirts of the city and pretty much try to maintain a self sustaining lifestyle.  They grow everything in their back garden.  Broccoli, garlic, herbs, tomatoes (when in season) etc… Everything!  You get the idea…leaves my own farmers market to [...]

I Love Lamb

I will apologise to any vegetarians now if you find this post offensive.  Or maybe not!  My name is Peter and I’m a lamboholic!  Yep! That’s right.  It’s an addiction. It’s become so expensive to buy this stuff right now that I couldn’t resist these beautiful lamb cutlets when I saw them at the butchers the other day.  Priced at $2.50 each I was warned before I made my purchase.  [...]

Spanakorizo

This dish is another one of those Greek classics that was constantly featured in my childhood.  I probably didn’t appreciate it growing up but I love it as an adult.  It’s “more-ish” and I actually find it quite addictive!  In fact I ate it for three days straight!  Spanakorizo is a healthy dish and literally translates as spinach and rice.  Served with a hunk of feta and bread on the [...]
